But it is observed that teen age boys and girls often suffers mostly for their acne; and these acne is mostly cause excessive secretion of oils from the sebaceous gland. Every one needs to pay proper attention in giving treatment to acne. Otherwise acne can result in some permanent scar and life time infections. The most important issue of concern of this stage is the lesser self confidence for the person. Therefore, you must not ignore acne but take proper medication.

If you start scratching your acne instead of treating it with medication, you may result in wider acne and getting the acne severe in nature. Acne is caused by many reasons;

Hormone reason: Hormonal changes associated with puberty in boys and girls, pregnancy, and the use of birth control pills

Genetic reason: Children of parents who were acne sufferers will frequently experience outbreaks as well

Stress reason: Stress which often leads to a loss of self esteem.

Gland activeness reason: Over active sebaceous glands

Skin build ups reason: Accumulated dead skin cells.

Bacteria reason: Bacteria

Habit reason: Irritated skin or scratching that causes inflammation.

Digestion reason: Anabolic steroids.

Side effect reason: Drugs such as, lithium, or androgens.

Contact reason: Exposure to chlorine compounds. Cosmetics may cause follicles to stick to each other producing an acne outbreak.

Here are the easy three simple steps to get rid of back acne:

1) Wash your body and particularly your back with Neutrogena Body Wash. Apply liberally to the areas with pimples. Wait a couple of minutes then rinse. Make sure you get rid of all the oil. Let the Neutrogena sink in and work it's magic. To make sure you are free of oil, you first need to wash your body with water as much as possible.

2) Scrubbing your back using an abrasive sponge, loofa or soft brush. Be sure to not scrub too hard because you will increase irritation. Moisturize with oil-free, medicated lotion. Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer, available at your local drugstore, is a great moisturizer to use.

3) Apply an acne medication cream. These are the easy three steps in order to getting rid of back acne. Apart from them you also take a note of tips describe in below paragraph.

If you wear makeup and facial moisturizers, choose products that won't cause pore buildup and nonacnegenic (won't cause acne). Remove all makeup nightly. Don't try to pop the pimple by squeezing, pinching, or picking at it. This will just inflame the pore and spread the oils that caused the pimple. See a dermatologist. They specialize in skin care and can prescribe you medicines that help you improve it. Don't stress out! Stressing out only makes acne worse. Find ways to stay calm in your life. Drink plenty of water. Staying well hydrated can help your condition improve.

Horny Goat Weed - Why it Increases Libido and Sexual Wellness by Kelly Price

This herb has a very catchy name but does it work? The answer is yes it does by combating 3 major causes of low libido to increase libido and enhance not just sexual wellness but overall health...

In China Horny Goat Weed has been used for thousands of years since a goat herder noticed increased sexual activity in his flock after feeding it to them.

A good story for sure but medical testing has shown just how powerful Horny Goat Weed is as a libido enhancer.

It works on three levels:

- It increases Nitric Oxide Levels

If you haven't heard of this chemical then you need to know about it, as without it you will never get an erection. Nitric Oxide is realized in the blood vessels in response to messages from the brain and relaxes the blood vessels so sufficient blood can rush in and create an erection.

Nitric oxide naturally declines with age and Horny Goat Weed tops it up. In addition Horny Goat Weed contains a variety of flavonoids one prominent one is icariin, which is a cGMP-specific PDE5 inhibitor.

- It increases Testosterone Levels

It has been shown to increase testosterone levels in the body and we don't need to tell you how important it is to have enough!

- Decreasing Stress and Increasing Energy

It works as an adaptogen within the body, by increasing levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine increasing energy levels -but reduces cortisol levels when they are high ( reducing stress ). When the body is stressed, increased cortisol levels cause fatigue and this leads to diminished sex drive.

Horny Goat Weed is one of the most powerful natural herbs of the planet and can certainly enhance overall wellness and sex drive and when combined with some other herbs that complement it, becomes even more powerful.

These herbs are:

Cnidium Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng and Schizandra Berries.

If you combine the above herbs with it you will have a powerful combination which enhances not just your sexual health but your overall wellness to and we will cover this combination in part 2 of this article series

Altaflora Vs Yoghurts - Final Score is 7000 - 1 by Ivan S. Pullicino B.Pharm. (Hons.) M.Sc

A probiotic is a food-supplement containing live beneficial microbes that can be used to fortify or rebuild our own natural flora.

Why do we need probiotics?
To keep the balance of intestinal flora tipped toward the positive side, because contrasting the beneficial flora are the bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoans, all in some way or other implicated in heart disease allergies, asthma, skin disorders, obesity, digestive problems, urinary tract infections, certain cancers, Alzheimer’s and other chronic diseases. Thus a daily probiotic can be an effective preventative and therapeutic measure to help keep the balance of good intestinal flora.

So feeling well depends very much on keeping your friendly bacteria happy and not letting the bad flora get the upper hand as happens for example when there is food poisoning.

ALTAFLORA ELECTROLYTES of Alta Care Laboratoires, Paris, is a therapeutic nutritional preparation for gut effects favouring growth of normal bacterial flora and not favouring growth of pathogenic organisms. Indications for use include diarrhoea, constipation, gastro-enteritis, peristatltic disorders, flatulence, stress, antibiotic therapy, and age.

Yoghurt is renowned for its health boosting qualities. It introduces active probiotic cultures that help wedge out unfriendly bacteria by competing directly with two main food poisons: the toxic strains of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Many experts have extolled the health benefits of yoghurt, and other fermented foods. Fair enough because yoghurt is one of the few foods that can replace the good flora to the intestine !

But the strategy resulting from the properties and qualities of ALTAFLORA ELECTROLYTES to uphold the intestinal flora balance is far superior to that of any yoghurt. Altaflora electrolytes are probiotic supplements and therefore the number of good bacteria is much higher than the number of bacteria found in yoghurts. The good bacteria selected in Altaflora electrolytes is not a generic one as in the case of yoghurts but a highly selective one. The good bacteria with high adhesive properties are chosen for Altaflora electrolytes. This means that the good bacteria found in Altaflora not only are high in number than those found in yoghurts but are of also a superior quality.

Research has shown that while normal yoghurt has approximately 100 billion good bacteria (CFUS) - frozen yoghurt having 10 billion, Altaflora Electrolytes has 700 billion (CFUs), while the Altaflora Capsules has 250 billion.

Moreover ALTAFLORA ELECTROLYTES besides having so many beneficial flora, has also inulin. Inulin is a prebiotic – soluble fibres; sugars that basically flora eat on to form cultures. Inulin is not present in Altaflora Capsules. Nor is it present in yoghurts.

Unlike yoghurts the ALTFLORA ELECTROLYTES is also rich in electrolytes, that is sodium, magnesium and potassium. Electrolytes are present in high dosages in both the Altaflora capsules and the Altaflora sachets.

As one can see the benefits of ALTAFLORA ELECTROLYTES by far outweigh those of yoghurt. An approximate equation could easily be:
1 ALTAFLORA SACHET (of Altaflora Electrolytes) = 2 ALTFLORA CAPSULES = 7000 YOGHURTS.

It’s important to support probiotic use and your existing flora through optimal nutrition, especially by minimizing refined sugar and processed foods in your diet. For many of us, however, diet alone is not adequate when we need to repopulate our systems with good bacteria. Remember, we are talking trillions of bacteria here! And age, poor diet, stress, disease, and antibiotics all take their toll on our intestines’ little helpers. You need a steady, consistent supply of probiotics to redress these issues and many times your daily yoghurt would not be enough. So make sure that ALTAFLORA ELECTROLYTES becomes your strategic partner. Altaflora electrolytes are only available in pharmacies but they can be bought over the counter and there is no need of a prescription.

www.altacare.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://healthlife-ndut.blogspot.com/2008/06/altaflora-vs-yoghurts-final-score-is.html' title='Altaflora Vs Yoghurts - Final Score is 7000 - 1 by Ivan S. It is a common problem for cancer patients and often results from the therapies used to suppress or control tumors. Anemia is associated with fatigue - a feeling of weakness or diminished physical and mental capacity unrelieved by rest (fatigue). Additional symptoms include diminished ability to perform daily functions and possibly impaired cognitive function, headache, dizziness, chest pain and shortness of breath, nausea, depression and occasionally pain.

Causes of Anemia

There are more than 400 types of anemia, which are divided into 3 groupings

Anemia caused by blood loss

Anemia caused by decreased or faulty red blood cell production

Anemia caused by destruction of red blood cells

How We Can Treat Anemia

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Current treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency consists of a life-long regimen of monthly B-12 injections.

Sickle cell anemia. Treatment for this incurable anemia may include the administration of oxygen, pain-relieving drugs, and oral and intravenous fluids to reduce pain and prevent complications. Doctors also commonly use blood transfusions, folic acid supplements and antibiotics.

Always drink a full 8 ounces of fluid with an iron pill. Taking orange juice with an iron pill may help increase iron absorption. (Some doctors also recommend taking a vitamin C supplement with the iron pill.)

Tablets should be kept in a cool place. (Bathroom medicine cabinets may be too warm and humid, which may cause the pills to disintegrate.)

If you suspect you have iron deficiency anemia, do not take iron pills without consulting your doctor. Taking iron pills could delay the diagnosis of a serious problem such as colorectal cancer or a bleeding ulcer.

Medicines for Anemia

Homeopathic Medicines:-

Iron is the great allopathic remedy for anemia from almost any cause. It is also a great homoeopathic remedy, but it will not cure every case of anemia; careful individualization is necessary. When the patient has an appearance of full bloodedness or plethora, which is followed by paleness or earthiness of the face and puffiness of the extremities, then Ferrum will benefit. It is not the remedy for the anemia resulting from loss of fluids; that is Cinchona, or perhaps Natrum muriaticum. When Ferrum is indicated the mucous membranes are pale, more so than with Cinchona, and there is apt to be an anemia murmur in the veins of the neck. The patient is easily exhausted. Vomiting of food after eating may occur.

Nutritional Therapy for Anemia:-

A lack of the nutrient in the diet

An inability to absorb that nutrient (Certain hereditary conditions and deficiencies of other nutrients can keep the body from absorbing iron, folate, or vitamin B12, regardless of the amount present in the diet. Alcoholism can prevent proper absorption of folate in particular.)

An excessive loss of that nutrient (For women, heavy blood loss during menstruation or pregnancy can lead to problems with iron-deficiency anemia.)

The Many Benefits Of Aloe Vera by Sharon James

One of the biggest misconceptions about aloe Vera is that it can only be used as a topical cream. One of the main ingredients in these drinks is protein, a compound known as a building block for muscle, bone, skin, and other tissues. Many experts believe that people who are healthy can benefit from drinking these enriched liquids. Meal replacement drinks are a great way to lose weight, increase protein intake, and increase muscle.

When it comes down to choosing a protein shake, you might be surprised by the variety of flavors, textures, and benefits that each drink has to offer. There are numerous flavors, ranging anywhere from chocolate to strawberry; and they can offer a variety of benefits. One shake can have more vitamins and protein, while another may provide a high number of carbohydrates. Choosing the right shake for you basically comes down to what it is that you are trying to achieve. If you want to lose weight it might be beneficial to choose a shake which offers weight loss properties. There are certain meal replacement drinks out there which have the power to satisfy hunger and boost your metabolism. The shakes which provide the consumer with more vitamins and healthy ingredients often times strengthen the immune system and aid the body in defending itself from illnesses.

Furthermore, when purchasing a protein shake be sure to find one that has a higher number of natural ingredients and lower number of unnatural additives. When a shake is made mostly with natural ingredients it will have a smoother taste. Yeast, chemical additives, and artificial dyes in shakes often provide the consumer with an unsatisfying taste and a reduced or non-existent amount of health benefits. Wallace

How many health benefits can a small fruit provide? Well, in the case of the tomato, numerous health benefits can be attributed to this particular fruit. Tomatoes are loaded with countless health properties that aid in reducing and preventing some of the most life threatening diseases.

First of all, tomatoes contain four major carutenoids: alpha carotene, beta carotene, lutein, and lycopene. All of these carutenoids have individual health benefits and they offer great health advantages when they all work together. The red pigment contained in the tomatoes is Lycopene. Lycopene is one of the strongest antioxidants and it is very beneficial when it comes down to neutralizing free radicals which damage the cells in the body. Lycopene is also very beneficial when it comes down to heart health, prostate health and pancreatic health. A study has shown that men, who consumed ten tomatoes per week, reduced their chances of developing prostate cancer by an overwhelming forty-five percent. Other studies indicated that people who consumed more than seven servings of raw tomatoes lowered their risk of developing stomach, rectal or colon cancers by sixty percent.

The prevention of lung cancer is yet another health benefit of consuming tomatoes. Recent studies show that tomatoes contain two important compounds, coumaric acid and chlorogenic acid. These two compounds block some of the carcinogens that are found in tobacco. When these carcinogens are blocked, our bodies are protected from second hand smoke and we are less likely to develop lung cancer. And last but certainly not least, tomatoes are extremely rich in potassium, something that many of us lack in our daily diets. For instance, a single cup of tomato juice contains 534 milligrams of potassium. Clearly, with all of these health benefits, many of us should incorporate more tomatoes into our diets.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://healthlife-ndut.blogspot.com/2008/06/benefits-of-tomatoes-by-lauren-b.html' title='Benefits of Tomatoes by Lauren B. The numerous health benefits of honey have made it an important aspect of traditional medicines such as Ayurveda. Scientists are also researching the benefits of honey in modern medicine, especially its benefit in healing wounds.

Perhaps your parents failed to mention it when they discussed the birds and the bees with you, but honey has long been known to have a multitude of healing powers with everything from relieving a sore throat, allergies, healing wounds, etc. It also goes great with peanut butter.

It contains vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3 all of which change according to the qualities of the nectar and pollen. Besides the above, copper, iodine, and zinc exist in it in small quantities. Several kinds of hormones are also present in it. Approximately one half of the human diet is derived directly or indirectly from crops pollinated by bees. Today honeybees are an essential part of a healthy agriculture economy.

If you have allergies, honey can be beneficial. If you eat honey that is local to your area, it may prevent your seasonal allergy. Bees use the pollen from local plants and eventually it ends up in your honey.

Honey has been used in many medical applications over the years, but recent studies are now able to prove its beneficial nature in some applications, including as antibacterial topical treatment for burns and ulcers. The reason is because honey has osmotic properties; that is, it tends to withdraw water. Water molecules strongly react with the sugars in honey, leaving little water available for microorganisms. Thus, infection-causing bacteria is literally dehydrated to death by honey.

The fascinating process of making honey begins when the bees feast on flowers, collecting the flower nectar in their mouths. This nectar then mixes with special enzymes in the bees' saliva, an alchemical process that turns it into honey. The bees carry the honey back to the hive where they deposit it into the cells of the hive's walls. The fluttering of their wings provides the necessary ventilation to reduce the moisture's content making it ready for consumption.

Effective use of honey during migraine attacks

For people who have frequent migraine attacks, should sip a dessert spoon of honey dissolved in half a glass of warm water at the start of the attack. Repeat after 20 minutes if needed. Its effective as migraine is stress related.

If your kids are finding hard to cope with the physical strain from the buzzing activities at school, prepare them some sandwiches with honey, butter and ham to make sure they have enough energy to sustain through the day. My kids are delighted when they see me prepare warm honey water in their bottles. They couldn't care a bit about the health benefits of honey, but simply love the taste of it!

Approximately one half of the human diet is derived directly or indirectly from crops pollinated by bees. Bees use the pollen from local plants and eventually it ends up in your honey.

SCID by Peterhutch

SCID stands for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency. That means that Parker's immune system does not work correctly. Your immune system is composed of white blood cells which are composed of different types of cells. Two of those are called T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes. The T-lymphocytes are matured in the Thymus Gland and go around fighting different viruses. The B-lymphocytes are divided further into different cells called immunoglobulins.

SCID is actually a group of inherited disorders that cause severe abnormalities of the immune system. These disorders lead to reduced or malfunctioning T- and B-lymphocytes, the specialized white blood cells made in the bone marrow to fight infection. When the immune system doesn't function properly, it can be difficult or impossible for it to battle viruses, bacteria, and fungi that cause infections.

The symptom information on this page attempts to provide a list of some possible symptoms of SCID. This symptom information has been gathered from various sources, may not be fully accurate, and may not be the full list of symptoms of SCID. Furthermore, symptoms of SCID may vary on an individual basis for each patient. Only your doctor can provide adequate diagnosis of symptoms and whether they are indeed symptoms of SCID.

The treatment of SCID constitutes a medical emergency. The immediate concern is to bring any current infections under control, and to strengthen the baby's weakened condition with adequate nutrition. IVIG may help to bolster the immune responses. A lasting remedy, however, requires a more drastic approach. A bone marrow transplant from a matched donor or parent is arranged as quickly as possible. Children whose SCID is due to ADA deficiency have another alternative. Injections of PEG-ADA will protect them against recurrent infections, allow them to control ordinary childhood infections such as chicken pox, and make it feasible for them to lead nearly normal lives.

SCID is usually transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait, although it may be X-linked. In most cases, the genetic defect seems associated with failure of the stem cell to differentiate into T and B lymphocytes. Many molecular defects such as mutation of the kinase ZAP-70 can cause SCID. X-linked SCID is due to a mutation of a subunit of the interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, and IL-7 receptors. Less commonly, it results from an enzyme deficiency.

SCID, this immune system disorder is defined by a severe defect in the body's production of T-cells. Your T-cells, basically, may be thought of as the Marines of your whole defense system; T-cells do not just provide a defensive wall but they are the elite fighting units that actually attack unwanted intruders in your body. Now, you can just imagine what will happen if your body has only a few of these soldiers; it will be totally impossible for your body too.

Symptoms were discovered only by means of the clinical interview appear compelling regarding the inclusion of this method in the investigation of the long-term effects of trauma. Most particularly, the finding that of the 10 cluster C symptoms discovered, nine were elicited only by the psychodynamic clinical interview raises serious concern about whether symptoms characterized by avoidance and numbing of general responsiveness can be reliably detected by standardized interviewing technique. This problem was earlier recognized by the PTSD Advisory Committee for DSM-IV, which noted the problem with standardized methodology in operationalizing criteria for the assessment of such symptoms of avoidance and numbing as denial, psychogenic amnesia, and the sense of a foreshortened future.

Bronchitis by Peterhutch

Acute bronchitis is usually due to an infection and generally lasts for no more than a few weeks and will resolve either with treatment or on its own. It can be caused by the same viruses that cause the common cold and is a common complication of the cold or flu.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi (lung airways), resulting in persistent cough that produces consideration quantities of sputum (phlegm). Bronchitis is more common in smokers and in areas with high atmospheric pollution. Chronic bronchitis is a disease in which there is diffused inflammation of the air passages in the lungs, leading to decreased uptake of oxygen by the lungs and increased mucus production. Bronchitis usually occurs following a viral respiratory infection or with prolonged cigarette smoking.

Signs And Symptoms — Fever is not common in people with acute bronchitis, although it may be a sign of another condition such as the flu or pneumonia. A persistent cough is the most common sign of acute bronchitis; this usually lasts between 10 and 20 days. In some people, coughing produces sputum (mucus); this does not mean that there is a bacterial infection or that antibiotics are needed.

Acute bronchitis is almost always caused by viruses that attack the lining of the bronchial tree and cause infection. As your body fights back against these viruses, more swelling occurs and more mucus is made. It takes time for your body to kill the viruses and heal the damage to your bronchial tubes. In most cases, the same viruses that cause colds cause acute bronchitis. Research has shown that bacterial infection is a much less common cause of bronchitis than we used to think. Very rarely, an infection caused by a fungus can cause acute bronchitis.

With Relieve Your Bronchitis Natural Remedy, you will start fighting bronchitis within minutes. You will learn the root germ that causes bronchitis, and how to keep it from returning. The coughing fits, the wheezing, and the aches and pains will stop. You will no longer have to miss, work and school due to illness. You can save a lot of money, from running to the doctors. You can say goodbye to harmful antibiotics or medication. T

unless you are a smoker antibiotic's are not needed bronchitis is not a bacterial infection it is viral. how ever you do need to go to the doc if you are having trouble breathing or if your cough is keeping you up they will give you a abutorol inhaler and some codeine cough syrup.

It is quite difficult to choose an appropriate treatment in chronic bronchitis. It is recommended to drink lots of liquids which are very helpful for the evacuation of the mucus. It was showed that antibiotics are not the right choice to treat Bronchitis, because the most of them are caused by viruses which don't respond to this kind of treatment.

It is not very hard to avoid acute Bronchitis. It is necessary just to wash your hands frequently, get more rest and drink plenty of liquids. Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses or bacteria. One can be contaminated with this agents by breathing coughing droplets from the air or by touching contaminated surfaces, by breathing polluted, by smoking or breathing cigarette smoke or other harmful smokes.

Albinism by Peterhutch

Albinism is hereditary it is not an infectious disease and cannot be transmitted through contact, blood transfusions, or other vectors. The principal gene which results in albinism prevents the body from making the usual amounts of the pigment melanin. Most forms of albinism are the result of the biological inheritance of genetically recessive alleles (genes) passed from both parents of an individual, though some rare forms are inherited from only one parent. There are other genetic mutations which are proven to be associated with albinism. All alterations, however, lead to changes in melanin production in the body.

Symptoms

There are several ethnic groups in Central and South American who carry this trait. A small blood sample is obtained from the affected individual and the parents and molecular genetic analysis of the DNA code is performed to identify the affected genes. People with albinism are born with little or no pigmentation in their eyes, skin and hair (oculocutaneous albinism) or sometimes in the eyes alone (ocular albinism).

Apart from their physical appearance, people with the condition can experience a number of associated problems, depending on which genetic type they have. Problems with vision and from skin burning in sunlight are particularly common.
The disorder may also be diagnosed based on the appearance of the skin, hair, and eyes. It is very helpful for an ophthalmologist to perform a complete examination of anyone with albinism. An electroretinogram test, to determine brain waves produced by light shined in the eye, can reveal "abnormal wiring" of the visual system in ocular forms of albinism.

Causes

Albinism is an inherited problem caused by a flaw in one or more of the genes that are responsible for directing the eyes and skin to make melanin (pigment). As a result, little or no pigment is made, and the child's skin, eyes and hair may be colorless.

The most severe form of albinism is called oculocutaneous albinism. Persons with this type of albinism have white or pink hair, skin, and iris color, as well as vision problems.

Another type of albinism, called ocular albinism type 1 (OA1), affects only the eyes. The person's skin and eye colors are usually in the normal range. However, an eye exam will show that there is no coloring in the back of the eye (retina).

In most types of albinism, a recessive trait, the child inherits flawed genes for making melanin from both parents. Because the task of making melanin is complex, there are many different types of albinism, involving a number of different genes.

Treatment

There is no treatment or cure for albinism. Since individuals with albinism have little or no melanin in their skin, they need to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear adequate clothing when outside to prevent ultraviolet-induced damage to the skin. The use of sunglasses will reduce the symptoms of light sensitivity as well as protecting the eyes. An ophthalmologist can treat other eye or vision symptoms. Individuals with albinism should see a dermatologist regularly to be screened for skin cancer. Albinism does not alter life expectancy or have other serious health effects.

Diagnosis of all types of OCA is obvious from examination of the skin, but detection of iris translucency, reduced retinal pigmentation, foveal hypoplasia, reduced visual acuity, and ocular movement disorders (strabismus and nystagmus) is necessary. Some surgical interventions may improve ocular movement disorders.

In aromatherapy Lemon essential oil has an amazingly wide range of uses. The lemon conjures up images of freshness and cleanliness and sunshine and lemonade.

Research by Jean Valnet, M.D., showed that vaporized Lemon essential oil can kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in one hour, staphylococcus aureus in two hours and germs causing pneumonia within three hours.

Even a 0.2% solution of Lemon essential oil can kill diphtheria bacteria in 20 minutes and inactivate tuberculosis bacteria. Its antiseptic properties will last for twenty days. It is perfect for destroying air-borne germs in hospital rooms, waiting rooms, and schools. It is particularly effective in neutralizing unpleasant body odors of patients suffering from cancer.

Lemon essential oil is an essential oil with high vibrations, comparable to a high-toned whistle. Sandalwood, in comparison, hums like a bumble bee. Essential oils with high vibrations lifts spirits, especially when one may be feeling mental fatigue.

Lemon especially brings a sense of warmth and fun to intellectual pursuits. Although Lemon essential oil is beneficial for both physical and psychological heaviness, it mostly stimulates the mind, increasing concentration and the ability to memorize.

Brain research concerned with the effects of fragrances has found that Lemon essential oil primarily activates the hippocampus. University researchers in Japan found that diffusing certain aromas in an office environment dramatically improved mental accuracy and concentration.

Diffused Lemon essential oil resulted in 54 percent fewer errors. When aromas were diffused during test taking, scores increased by as much as 50 percent. In other research Lemon essential oil has shown to have antidepressant effects.

A 1995 Mie University study found that citrus fragrances boosted immunity, induced relaxation, and reduced depression. Lemon essential oil is an immune stimulant. It increases white blood cells, improves microcirculation and is antiseptic.

Lemon essential oil consists of 68 percent d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant. Lemon has an approximate ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) of 6,619 (TE/L). TE/L is expressed as micromole Trolox equivalent per liter. D-limonene has been extensively studied for its ability to combat tumor growth in over 50 clinical studies.

Some Great Therapeutic Uses for Lemon Essential Oil

For colds or throat and mouth infections, gargling with Lemon essential oil (2 drops diluted in half a glass of water) and taking Lemon essential oil orally by adding it to a propolis tincture is helpful.
Place a drop of Lemon essential oil on cold sores, herpes or other mouth ulcers to lessen pain and aid in healing.

For treatment of itchy eczemas and measles add Lemon essential oil to a sponge bath (1-2 drops to a quart of water)
Lemon essential oil because of its vitamin C content is beneficial for treating anemia.

Since oils strengthen vascular tissues, it is used for treating varicose veins by improving circulation and relieving pressure on the veins. It may be applied in skin lotions and compresses, mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with Cypress essential oil.

Lemon essential oil acts as an astringent, an antiseptic, a disinfectant, and a styptic that stops wounds from bleeding. It becomes an excellent remedy when used in a compress or as a cleanser for treating bleeding wounds. Put a drop of Lemon essential oil on bleeding gums caused by gingivitis or tooth extraction.

Essential Lemon essential oil taken orally will help counteract a high acid content in body fluids by stimulating production of potassium carbonate, a neutralizing substance and is a preferred remedy for rheumatism and gout, since it cleanses the body of uric acid, a side effect of high acidity. In this case, the oil may be taken both orally and topically.

Lemon essential oil is a very good stimulant of the body's own immune system. It activates white blood cell formation and helps protect the body during flu epidemics.

Rub a drop of Lemon essential oil on a wart morning and night until it disappears. Rub a drop of Lemon oil on a corn, callous or bunion mornings and evenings. Rub two drops of Lemon essential oil topically to clear athlete's foot.

Rub several drops of Lemon essential oil on cellulite to improve circulation and help eliminate waste from the cells.

Put a drop of Lemon essential oil on oily skin or acne to balance sebaceous glands (oil glands).

CAUTION: Citrus oils should NOT be applied to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or ultraviolet light within 24 hours.

Some Great Household Uses for Lemon Essential Oil

Use 6-12 drops of Lemon essential oil in a spray bottle mixed with distilled water to use in the bathroom as an air freshener. Or you can diffuse Lemon essential oil to clean and disinfect the air in any room.

Use 1-2 drops of Lemon essential oil to remove gum, oil, grease spots or crayon.

Add 2-3 drops of Lemon essential oil to water and spray counter tops to sterilize them.

Soak your dishcloth overnight in a bowl of water and a drop of Lemon essential oil to disinfect and kill germs.

Add a drop of Lemon essential oil to your dishwasher before the wash cycle.

Rub a drop of Lemon essential oil on your hands after using a public bathroom.

Use a paper towel soaked with several drops of Lemon essential oil to sanitize bathroom fixtures and toilet seats.

Rub a drop of Lemon essential oil to clean a butcher's block or other cutting surfaces.

Put 10-15 drops of Lemon essential oil in each gallon of carpet cleaning solution to help pull out stains and brighten the rug. I tried all the drugs and therapies available. As it was by the time I was in my late 30s I was a frequent visitor to the emergency room. As anyone who has experienced a severe asthma attack can tell you they are terrifying.

Before we discuss the causes of asthma, I would like to know what explanation you actually are expecting to find here. Are you looking for a longwinded, terminology-laden story about the might of modern medicine? Or perhaps you are wondering how modern medicine has managed to discover ways to contain asthma but failed, in all these decades of research, to find a cure? You definitely will not find any of the first in here, and relatively little of the second. What this article concentrates on is real, tangible, practical ways you can help yourself get rid of asthma once and for all.

Often symptoms get started or "triggered" by something that bothers your lungs. These things are called asthma triggers. There are many kinds of triggers. They can range from viruses (such as colds) to allergies, to gases and particles in the air. Given this range, you may find it hard to figure out what starts your asthma attacks.

There is no magic cure for Asthma....no saintly procedure, no elixir, no god can help. You can improve your symptoms by avoiding the things that trigger asthma attacks (everyone has different triggers) and you can improve your lung function through exercise. Having an air purifier and a humidifier in the home can help as well;

Long-term control medications are taken daily to maintain control of persistent asthma. They primarily serve to control airway inflammation. The quick-relief medications are taken to achieve prompt reversal of an acute asthma “attack” by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle. Many asthma medications can be administered orally or by inhalation. Metered-dose inhalers (MDI’s) are the most widely used method, but dry powder inhalers are becoming popular.

People diagnosed with asthma as children sometimes seem to grow out of it so in that sense I guess for some it does go away. For others it gets worse as they grow up. If you're dealing with asthma in a child I would recommend seeing a pediatric pulomologist because there are other issues that can cause similar symptoms in children.

Dust mite droppings in the air after vacuuming, which can take hours to settle. The Baxi Clean Air System claims to starve dust mites by reducing air humidity.
Constipation. Pressure from the tummy area affects breathing. That, together with the effect of toxic build-up in the colon, demands action. Poor digestion is common with asthma. Eat little and often so that the digestive tract does not get clogged up. Nuts can have an inflating effect on the system of an asthmatic.

There are other asthma triggers that you can get rid of or avoid. Good examples of these triggers are cold air, dust, feathers or molds.
Cigarette smoking is another trigger that must be avoided. If you smoke, you need to quit. Smoking cigarettes will make your asthma worse, and if you breathe the smoke from someone else's cigarette, you may get an asthma attack.

Gallstone by Peterhutch

Gallstones are solid lumps or stones that form in the gallbladder or bile duct. They are formed when some of the chemicals stored in the gallbladder harden into a mass. About one in three women and one in five men have gallstones by the age of 75. Some people get just one large stone; others may have lots of tiny ones.

Gallstones are small, pebble-like substances that develop in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped sac located below your liver in the right upper abdomen. Gallstones form when liquid stored in the gallbladder hardens into pieces of stone-like material. The liquid—called bile—helps the body digest fats. Bile is made in the liver, then stored in the gallbladder until the body needs it.

Gallstones are the most common and costly digestive disease in the United States, causing more than 800,000 hospitalizations annually at estimated cost of over five billion dollars. More than 20 million Americans have gallstones and approximately one million new cases are diagnosed each year. Women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones; the higher prevalence of gallstones in women is thought to be caused by multiple pregnancies, obesity, and rapid weight loss. Well over half a million people undergo cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder) each year.

Gallstones usually form in the gallbladder; however, they also may form anywhere there is bile--in the intrahepatic, hepatic, common bile, and cystic ducts. Gallstones also may move about within bile, for example, from the gallbladder into the cystic or common duct.

Women are four times more likely to have gallstones than men. I suspect that pregnancy and childbirth may make the abdominal area more stagnant and become susceptible to gallstone formation. I used to think that gallstones only develop in people who are obese or have a high fat diet. I now believe bile stasis or gallbladder stagnation is a major cause of gallstone formation. I have never been on a high fat diet and have always been under-weight. When I tried my first gallbladder flush, more than 50 gallstones were released.

Biliary colic occurs more commonly at night, often with a sudden onset and increasing intensity over a 15-20 minute period, ending in a steady plateau which can last for several hours. The pain may spread to the area around the right shoulder. Nausea, vomiting and sweating often follow. The pain may gradually go away or decrease, becoming a less severe but persistent abdominal pain. The time period between biliary colic attacks is extremely variable; it may be weeks, months or even years.

Symptoms

Gallstones often have no symptoms and are usually discovered by a routine x-ray, surgery, or autopsy. Symptoms usually start after a large stone blocks the cystic duct or the common bile duct. The cystic duct drains the gallbladder, and the common bile duct is the main duct draining into the duodenum. Together, these ducts form part of the biliary system.

Most silent gallstones will not cause problems and go unnoticed. Sometimes gallstones may pass out of the body spontaneously. If the gallstones are causing pain, they can be removed by surgical procedures. If there is an infection, the infection can be treated by medication prescribed by your doctor.

Crunchy Nuts And Seeds Are Healthy Food Snacks by Brenda Skidmore

Are you looking for some delicious, alternative dietary choices to replace those highly processed sugar, and hydrogenated fat food snacks? If so, look no further than to nuts or seeds. Most people do not even consider them, avoiding nuts or seeds, altogether, because of their high fat and calorie content. While it is true that they are high in both, shunning them from your diet for these reasons, alone, will have you missing out on a wide array of other important nutrients.

Nuts and seeds, depending on the variety, are quite a nutrient dense food. Nutritional research science studies are finding out, that people who eat 1 to 3 ounces of nuts regularly have fewer risks of developing heart disease, cancer, and lessens the severity of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

These foods are healthy food snack choices, and although they are nutritious, some people may have a hard time not over indulging on them. As with any other diet choice, healthy or unhealthy, moderation is the key.

There is a way, though, that you can improve upon the nutritional aspect to eating them even further. Try eating them dry roasted. Avoid most commercially processed brands, which are slathered in several unhealthy varieties of processed polyunsaturated fats like cottonseed, rapeseed, and soybean oils, and coated in nutrient deficient processed salt.

While everyone may not have this convenience in their own backyard, Amish community bulk food stores are a wonderful resource for finding many different kinds of fresh, raw nuts and seeds. Roasting them does lessen the nutritional value slightly, but you can do this at home rather easily, and you will have a much healthier snack product afterwards. Coat the nuts or seeds with a little coconut oil, sprinkle with sea salt, bake in the oven, and store in an air-tight container.

Nuts and seeds are high in mostly monounsaturated fat and, to a lesser degree, polyunsaturated fat. They are also good sources of antioxidant vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, fiber, and cholesterol lowering phytosterols.

When choosing to add them for health conscious reasons, to your existing diet, don't consider them as a fix-all approach for poor eating habits. Look at them as a replacement therapy tool, in getting rid of the processed fatty meat snacks, other fried foods, and sugar laden treats out of your diet. Nuts and seeds can help you with weight management issues, because of their high percentage of healthy fats, protein, and fiber content. They provide a 'full' feeling of satiety when combined with a full glass of water.

Most nuts and seeds are high in calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These minerals help to control blood pressure, while their naturally high fiber content helps protect against colon cancer.

As an example, of the nutritional powerhouse that can be found in nuts and seeds, a listing of the content in certain types of nuts and seeds is provided below for your information. One hundred grams equals, approximately, a 3.5 ounce serving.

Seeds: Pumpkin-100 g pumpkin seeds contain 29 g protein, 11.2 mg iron, and 1144 mg phosphorous. Sesame- 100 g of sesame seeds contain 26.4 g protein, 12.6 mg vitamin B-3, 7.8 mg iron, 131 mg calcium, and 10.3 mg zinc. Sunflower- 100 g sunflower seeds are an excellent source of potassium and magnesium and contain 24 g protein, 7.1 mg iron, and 120 mg calcium. Flax seeds- 100 g flax seeds contain 431 mg magnesium, 831 mg potassium, and 112 g folic acid, not to mention its high omega-3 content.

Nuts: Almonds- 100 g almonds contain 16.9 g protein, 4.2 mg iron, 250 mg calcium, 20 mg vitamin E, 3.1 mg zinc, and 0.92 mg vitamin B-2. Cashews- 100 g cashews contain 17.2 g protein, 60 micrograms vitamin A, and 3.8 mg iron. Peanuts- 100 g peanuts contain 2.3 g protein, 2 mg iron, and 3 mg zinc. Pecans- 100 g pecans contain 9.2 g protein, a very high fat content of 71.2 g (of which, 60 percent is mono and 30 percent is polyunsaturated), 130 micrograms vitamin A (also very high), 2.4 g iron, and 73 mg calcium.

And, while there is definitely more nutritional content in each one of those food sources listed above, nutritional research science is still discovering, and identifying, even more unique and natural food substances in all of our plant foods every day.

One thing is for certain, we are all living through one of the most interesting generations to date. For the first time in history, man's curiosity has him seriously investigating the perfect union nutritional path nature intended all of us to strictly follow.

What is being learned today, about eating beneficial plant foods in their truest and unadulterated forms, will help future generations wipe out many modern diseases that are, now, plaguing most modern cultures. Although this one aspect, alone, is not the complete answer to all of modern society's health care woes, these new nutritional discoveries being uncovered today will definitely help more people lead healthier and happier lives tomorrow, in body, mind, and spirit.

Top 10 Benefits Of Hot Stone Massage by by: Chris Turley

Have you ever been so tired that you felt like your head was going to burst? Almost all people experience this at some point in their lives. Although there’s nothing wrong with it happening once or twice but for you to constantly to get tired beyond what your mind and body can handle is not good for your health and well-being.

Hot stone massage which is one of the best ways to take a break is seen by a lot of people not as a luxury but as a necessity to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you are not sure why, here are the top 10 benefits of hot stone massage:

1. A good way to manage stress. A hot stone massage offers some relaxing time for your mind and does wonders in releasing muscular tension. Thus this is one of the best ways to relieve yourself of stress.

2. Effective in muscle relaxation. The heat in the stones is effective in enabling the muscles to loosen up and relax. This makes it easier for deep tissue manipulation.

3. Improves health conditions. More and more doctors are beginning to recommend this therapy as part of medical treatment of a lot of health problems such as Arthritis, Fibromylagia, Hypertension and musculoskeletal problems.

4. Allows better sleep. It’s really hard to get a good quality sleep when you’re over fatigued. With the relaxation you get from this therapy, it makes it easier for you to doze off into a deep sleep which your body needs to recuperate from daily fatigue. This is why people who have Insomnia are often advised to get this therapy.

5. Relieves pain. Manipulation of muscles can significantly reduce muscle spasm and give comfort to painful muscles so those who suffer from back pains or muscle aches often go for this therapy.

6. Improves blood circulation and flow of energy. The stones are placed on key points of your body known as energy centers which are sometimes clogged or blocked.

7. Allows for easy rehabilitation. Massage can facilitate easy recovery from injuries such as sprains.

8. Releases toxins from your body. When muscles are massaged, toxins that are clogged within are released. This is why, it’s advised that clients drink plenty of water after a session to help flush out those unhealthy and unwanted toxins.

9. Satisfies human longing for touch. It’s only human to crave for hugs and affection. But since our loved ones are not always within a hug’s reach, having a hot stone massage is a good alternative to suffice this need.

10.Gives you a happy feeling. Feher, B. Kovacs, I. Kovacs

Currently, age-related macular degeneration is one of the most common eye diseases causing severe and permanent loss of vision. This disease is estimated to affect approximately 300-500 thousand Hungarians. While earlier no treatment was available, in the recent decade an antioxidant therapy became very popular using combinations of high dosage antioxidant vitamins C, E, beta carotene and zinc. Based on theoretical concepts and mostly in vitro experiences, this combination was thought to be effective through neutralizing reactive oxygen species. According to a large clinical trial (AREDS) it reduced progression of intermediate state disease to advanced state, but did not influence early disease. This original combination, due to potential severe side effects, is not on the market anymore. However, the efficacy of modified formulas has not been proved yet. Recently, the metabolic therapy, a combination of omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10 and acetyl-L-carnitine has been introduced for treating early age-related macular degeneration through improving mitochondrial dysfunction, specifically improving lipid metabolism and ATP production in the retinal pigment epithelium, improving photoreceptor turnover and reducing generation of reactive oxygen species. According to a pilot study and a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind clinical trial, both central visual field and visual acuity slightly improved after 3-6 months of treatment and they remained unchanged by the end of the study. The difference was statistically significant as compared to the base line or to controls. These functional changes were accompanied by an improvement in fundus alterations: drusen covered area decreased significantly as compared to the base line or to control. Characteristically, all these changes were more marked in less affected eyes. A prospective case study on long-term treatment confirmed these observations. With an exception that after slight improvement, visual functions remained stable, drusen regression continued for years. Sometimes significant regression of drusen was found even in intermediate and advanced cases. All these findings strongly suggested that the metabolic therapy may be the first choice for treating age-related macular degeneration. Currently, this is the only combination of ingredients corresponding to the recommended daily allowance, and at the same time, which showed clinically proved efficacy.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://healthlife-ndut.blogspot.com/2008/06/metabolic-therapy-for-early-treatment.html' title='Metabolic therapy for early treatment of age-related macular degeneration by by J. Fat-soluble vitamins (A,D,E, and K) are so named because they are stored in the body's fatty tissue and do not have to be replenished daily. But be careful: Because they are stored, overdoses of these vitamins can lead to toxicity.

The water-soluble vitamins (with the exception of vitamin C) are composed entirely of the B and B-complex vitamins, including Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pyridoxine (B6), Folate, Cobalamin (B12), Biotin and Pantothenic Acid. Because these vitamins are water soluble and thus have difficulty entering fatty tissues, they aren't stored in the body and excessive amounts are excreted. And while this means toxicity is generally not a problem, these vitamins must be continually included in a bodybuilder's diet.

Vitamins:
Cobalamin (vitamin B12)

Although the functions of vitamin B12 are numerous, those important to bodybuilders include carbohydrate metabolism and maintenance of nervous system tissue (the spinal cord and nerves that carry signals from the brain to muscle tissues). Stimulation of muscles via nerves is a critical step in the contraction, coordination and growth of muscles.

Vitamin B12 is available only from foods of animal origin; therefore,it is very important for athletes following a strict vegetarian diet to consult a physician about vitamin B12 supplementation. In fact, B12 shots are popular with countless athletes, vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike, many of who swear it helps them perform better.

Biotin

Although there's a limited amount of sports nutrition research on Biotin, it makes our top 10 list because it has critical functions in amino acid metabolism and the production of energy from many sources. It also may be one vitamin that some bodybuilders have trouble when attempting to maintain an adequate supply.

The reason bodybuilders may have difficulty with Biotin is because it can be blocked by a substance called Avidin. Avidin is found in raw egg whites, a staple for many athletes. In fact, bodybuilders who eat raw egg whites or who don;t cook egg white well enough may experience growth problems with Biotin deficiency if their egg white consumption approaches 20 per day. Eating raw eggs can also lead to a bacterial infection called Salmonella, which can have severe health consequences.

Riboflavin (vitamin B2)

Riboflavin is involved in energy production in three areas:

-Glucose metabolism
-Oxidation of fatty acids
-The shuttling of hydrogen ions through the Krebs cycle. Of particular interest to bodybuilders, Riboflavin is somewhat related to protein metabolism. In fact, there is a strong relationship between lean body mass and dietary riboflavin.

One study by Belko and colleagues found that females needed higher than RDA levels of Riboflavin to return blood levels of Riboflavin to normal after exercise. Another study by Haralambie showed that Riboflavin supplementation improved muscular hyperexcitability (seen in trained athletes). This vitamin may prove to be especially important for athletes.

Vitamin A

Most of us know that vitamin A helps with vision, but bodybuilders need to become familiar with its other benefits. First of all, vitamin A is important in the synthesis of protein, the chief process of muscle growth. Second, vitamin A is involved in the production of Glycogen, the body's storage form of energy for high intensity performance.

The problem with vitamin A status in bodybuilders is twofold. First, American diets are consistently measured to be low in vitamin A. Second, both strenuous physical activity (which disrupts the absorption of vitamin A) and a low fat diet (which renders vitamin A loss in feces) jeopardize the level of vitamin A in the body. So be especially careful of your vitamin A intake during contest preparation.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, meaning it protects the cell's membranes. This is important because many of the metabolic processes that take place in the body, including the recuperation and growth of muscle cells, are dependent upon health cell membranes.

You've probably heard a lot about antioxidants in the news lately, and research continues to validate their importance. Specifically, antioxidants help to reduce the number of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are natural byproducts of cellular respiration, but accumulation of free radicals can lead to cellular changes and destruction (even cancer), rendering cells unable to adapt normally. This means a reduction in exercise induced processes in the cell such as repair and growth.

Niacin (vitamin B3)

This vitamin is involved in nearly 60 metabolic processes related to energy production and ranks high for bodybuilders by virtue of its critical importance in providing training fuel (no train, no gain)! The bad news is that high levels of Niacin have been found in the blood of athletes after exercise, suggesting that athletes may need more niacin than nonathletes. On the other hand, the good news is that even if a diet is low in Niacin, the body can make it from the amino acid tryptophan, which is found in abundance in turkey meat.

Bodybuilders are familiar with the form of Niacin known as nicotine acid, which causes vasodilation and may help a competitor look more vascular before going onstage. But this form of Niacin shouldn't be used during training; large doses of nicotinic acid (50 - 100 mg) significantly impairs the body's ability to mobilize and burn fat.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the absorption of Calcium and Phosphorus. Calcium is necessary for muscular contraction. If adequate stores of Calcium are not available in the muscle, full, hard muscular contractions cannot be sustained. Of course, Calcium is also needed for the integrity of bones, which must support increased muscle tissue and provide an anchor during muscular contraction.

And don't forget about Phosphorus. Phosphorus helps provide quick, powerful muscular contractions, which comprise the majority of movements during weight training. Phosphorus is also required for the synthesis of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), the high energy molecule used by your muscle cells during contraction.

This nutrient is high in the list since bodybuilders typically avoid the fat content, e.g., dairy foods. Look for vitamin D fortified foods and get in the habit of drinking at least one glass of low-fat or nonfat milk per day.

Thiamine (vitamin B1)

This B vitamin packs muscle! Thiamine is one of the vitamins required for protein metabolism and growth. It's also involved in the formation of hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body (especially working muscles). The transport of oxygen is critical to athletic performance and becomes even more important as intensity and duration of exercise increase.

Making matters more interesting, Thiamine, according to research, is one of the few vitamins that enhances performance when supplemented and is increasingly needed by athletes. Not only that, but Thiamine requirements appear to be directly related to caloric expenditure. The more exercise frequency, intensity and duration increase, the more Thiamine is needed.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)

Protein metabolism, growth and carbohydrate utilization are all made possible in part by the presence of vitamin B6. Like Thiamine, studies on Pyridoxine in athletic performance show a definite increased need for athletes and possible performance enhancement from supplementation.

The vitamin makes the number two spot for a very good reason: It's the only vitamin directly tied to protein intake. The more protein you eat, the more Pyridoxine you need. Of course, this, coupled with Pyridoxine's role in growth, had profound implications for bodybuilders, though it is generally not known or discussed in sports nutrition circles.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Surprised? Most athletes don't realize how important vitamin C status is to success. As the most widely studied vitamin in sports nutrition, Ascorbic acid has proven itself to be valuable to bodybuilders in many ways.

First, vitamin C is an antioxidant, protecting muscle cells from free radical damage, thus enhancing recovery and growth.

Second, Ascorbic acid is also involved with amino acid metabolism, especially the formation of Collagen. Collagen is the primary constituent of connective tissue, the stuff that holds your bones and muscles together. This may not seem important, but as you lift heavier weights, the stress you put on your structure becomes tremendous. If your connective tissue is not as healthy and strong as it should be (a problem often seen in steroid users), risk of injury dramatically increases.

Third, vitamin C helps in the absorption of Iron. Iron is necessary to help Oxygen bind to hemoglobin in blood. Without adequate oxygen transportation in blood, muscles are robbed of precious oxygen and performance is greatly reduced.

Fourth, Ascorbic acid also assists in the formation and release of steroid hormones, including the anabolic hormone testosterone.

Finally, vitamin C is perhaps the most water soluble vitamin there is. In other words, it diffuses very rapidly in water. Since a muscle cell is mostly water, the more muscular an athlete becomes, the more vitamin C disperses and the lower the concentration of this critical substance becomes in body tissues. So vitamin C requirements are greatly increased for bodybuilders.

Bodybuilders are notorious for overlooking these key components of growth and performance. Do yourself a favor and analyze your diet to ensure you're taking in enough of the vitamins outlined above. Remember: You could have the best diet in the world in terms of calories, fat, etc, but if you're lacking adequate levels of these metabolic spark plugs, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

A mixture of extracts of black and green teas and mulberry leaf did not reduce weight gain in rats fed a high-fat diet by Elizabeth Fallon, Litao Zho

Tea extracts are used in many over-the-counter preparations claiming to promote weight loss. The rationale for this usage includes reports that green tea extract increases thermogenesis, and extracts of green and black tea and mulberry leaf inhibit the digestion/absorption of carbohydrate and fat. The investigators in this study tested the potential of increasing doses of a mixture of three extracts (50-percent black tea, 20-percent green tea, and 30-percent mulberry) to induce weight loss, steatorrhea, and blood lipid alterations in rats ingesting a high-fat diet, ad lib. The mixture was incorporated into chow in quantities of 0.5-, 3.0-, and 6.0 percent by weight; a control group received only chow. Food intake and weight were monitored daily, and quantitative fecal fat measurements were obtained weekly for four weeks. The 3.0- and 6.0-percent chows significantly increased fecal fat excretion to 15 percent of dietary fat intake (controls: 5%); however, no significant reduction in weight gain was observed. After four weeks of treatment, the 3.0- and 6.0-percent dosages were associated with significant reductions in serum triglycerides and increases in high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. However, these chow concentrations were associated with significant increases in serum ALT, and the 6.0-percent chow markedly increased serum alkaline phosphatase. This study does not provide support for the utility of this combination of black tea, green tea, and mulberry extracts in weight-loss regimens and indicates that high doses of this extract combination may be hepatotoxic. (Altern Med Rev 2007; 12(4):43-49)

Introduction

At least 402 different dietary supplements for the purpose of weight reduction are sold in the United States, (1) a sizeable portion of which contain various teas or tea extracts. To date, studies designed to demonstrate tea-induced weight loss have yielded variable results. (2-5)

The scientific basis for the use of tea for weight control includes reports that green and black tea extracts increase thermogenesis, (6-8) black tea inhibits fat digestion, (9,10) and green tea and mulberry leaf extracts inhibit the digestion and absorption of carbohydrate. (11-18) The present study hypothesized that a combination of these extracts would reduce weight gain in rats fed a high-fat diet. Varying dosages of a mixture of extracts of green tea, black tea, and mulberry leaf were added to chow, and potentially beneficial effects on weight loss, fecal fat excretion, and blood lipids were assessed, as were deleterious effects on hepatic and renal function.

Material and Methods

Extracts and Chow

The extract mixture was provided by NatureGen, Inc. (San Diego, CA) and consisted, by weight, of extracts of black tea (50%), green tea (20%) and mulberry (Morus alba) leaf (30%). The extracts were produced via repeated extraction of the dried leaves with a water/ethanol mixture, followed by evaporation to dryness. The mixture was incorporated into pellets made from a high-fat chow supplied by Harlan-Teklad Custom Research Diets (Madison, WI) (Table 1). Milk fat comprised about 43 percent of the chow calories, while carbohydrate (primarily corn starch) and protein (casein) provided about 42- and 15 percent of total calories (4.3-4.5 Kcal/g), respectively.

Subjects

Twenty male, Sprague-Dawley (Harlan; Indianapolis, IN) rats with initial weights of approximately 250 g were used. The rats were divided into four groups of five and provided with ad lib access to water and high-fat chow into which had been incorporated (by weight) 0.5-, 3.0-, and 6.0 percent of the mixture of extracts; a control group received chow without any of the extract mixture. The black tea dosages were selected to bracket the quantity required to yield an in vitro inhibition of pancreatic lipase similar to that of Orlistat[R], a commercially available lipase inhibitor. The green tea and mulberry dosages were approximately five times greater (per unit body surface area) than the dosages previously shown to inhibit carbohydrate absorption in humans. (19,20) The study was approved by the Animal Studies Subcommittee of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Measurements

Food intake was assessed daily and individual body weights were obtained weekly. Fecal fat was measured weekly by housing the rats in individual wire screen bottom cages to minimize coprophagy, with measurements after one, two, and three weeks determined on 24-hour fecal collections. A three-day fecal collection was obtained for the measurements at four weeks. Fecal fat was determined using minor modifications of a standard gravimetric technique. (21) Total fecal collection was added to pre-weighed polypropylene tubes. After the weight was determined, a recorded volume of water was added as needed to provide a smooth homogenate via a blender. Three grams of homogenate was transferred to polypropylene tubes with 1 drop concentrated HCl, 5 mL ethanol, and 10 mL hexane. The tubes were shaken for 10 minutes and centrifuged for five minutes. The hexane layer was transferred to pre-weighed glass vials. This extraction procedure was repeated with an additional 10 mL of hexane. The extracts were evaporated to dryness over a steam bath and stored overnight in a desiccator. The dry weights of the two extracts were added to obtain total fecal fat.

Use of vitamin D in clinical practice by by John J. Cannell, Bruce W. Hollis

The recent discovery--from a meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials--that supplemental cholecalciferol (vitamin D) significantly reduces all-cause mortality emphasizes the medical, ethical, and legal implications of promptly diagnosing and adequately treating vitamin D deficiency. Not only are such deficiencies common, and probably the rule, vitamin D deficiency is implicated in most of the diseases of civilization. Vitamin D's final metabolic product is a potent, pleiotropic, repair and maintenance, seco-steroid hormone that targets more than 200 human genes in a wide variety of tissues, meaning it has as many mechanisms of action as genes it targets. One of the most important genes vitamin D up-regulates is for cathelicidin, a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic. Natural vitamin D levels, those found in humans living in a sun-rich environment, are between 40-70 ng/mL, levels obtained by few modern humans. Assessing serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) is the only way to make the diagnosis and to assure treatment is adequate and safe. Three treatment modalities exist for vitamin D deficiency: sunlight, artificial ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, and vitamin D supplementation. Treatment of vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy patients with 2,000-7,000 IU vitamin [D.sub.3] per day should be sufficient to maintain year-round 25(OH)D levels between 40-70 ng/mL In those with serious illnesses associated with vitamin D deficiency, such as cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, autism, and a host of other illnesses, doses should be sufficient to maintain year-round 25(OH)D levels between 55-70 ng/ mL. Vitamin D-deficient patients with serious illness should not only be supplemented more aggressively than the well, they should have more frequent monitoring of serum 25(OH) D and serum calcium. Vitamin D should always be adjuvant treatment in patients with serious illnesses and never replace standard treatment. Theoretically, pharmacological doses of vitamin D (2,000 IU/kg/day for three days) may produce enough of the naturally occurring antibiotic cathelicidin to cure common viral respiratory infections, such as influenza and the common cold, but such a theory awaits further science. (Altern Med Rev 2008; 13(1):6-20)

Introduction

A recent meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials (RCT) found that cholecalciferol (vitamin D) significantly reduced total mortality. (1) This discovery is all the more remarkable because of the relatively low doses of vitamin D used (mean close 528 IU (13 mcg)) and because the finding persisted across a number of subgroup analyses. In spite of the low doses used and the short duration of the trials, vitamin D's mortality reduction was seven percent. (2) Indeed, the recent discovery that statins significantly increase 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels raise the possibility that some--or all--of the mortality reduction of statins may be mediated through increases in vitamin D levels. (3,4)

Lappe et al recently reported the first RCT of vitamin D in preventing internal cancers and found a 60-percent reduction in such cancers by increasing baseline 25(OH)D levels from 29 ng/mL to 38 ng/mL with 1,100 IU (28 mcg) per day. (5) Baseline and treatment-induced serum 25(OH)D levels were strong and independent predictors of cancer risk. Lappe et al's study left open the possibility that higher doses and higher treatment-induced 25(OH)D levels might prevent even more cancers. (Note that 25(OH)D levels are reported in the literature as either ng/mL or nmol/L; 1.0 ng/mL equals 2.5 nmol/L.)

Besides cancer, vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis, periodontal disease, macular degeneration, mental illness, propensity to fall, and chronic pain. (6-10) A recent review presented considerable evidence that influenza epidemics, and perhaps even the common cold, are brought on by seasonal deficiencies in antimicrobial peptides (AMP), such as cathelicidin, secondary to seasonal deficiencies in vitamin D. (11) Results of an RCT support the theory, finding 2,000 IU of vitamin D/day for one year virtually eliminated self-reported incidence of colds and influenza (Figure 1). (12) Even the current triple childhood epidemics of autism (13) (Figure 2), asthma, (14) and type 1 diabetes, (15) all of which blossomed after sun-avoidance advice became widespread, might be the tragic and iatrogenic sequela of gestational or early childhood vitamin D deficiencies brought on by medical advice to avoid the sun.

[FIGURE 1 OMITTED]

Claims that vitamin D may help prevent such a wide variety of diseases seem incredible until one realizes vitamin D is not a vitamin; rather, it is the only known substrate for a potent, pleiotropic, repair and maintenance, seco-steroid hormone with a single endocrine function, but multiple autocrine functions. Previously, many practitioners thought vitamin D's activity was principally its endocrine function--the regulation of serum calcium--and was thus mainly involved in bone metabolism. Indeed, the classic endocrine function of vitamin D begins when the kidney hydroxylates 25(OH)D into 1,25[(OH).sub.2]D, which then acts, both directly and indirectly, to maintain serum calcium.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://healthlife-ndut.blogspot.com/2008/05/use-of-vitamin-d-in-clinical-practice.html' title='Use of vitamin D in clinical practice by by John J. Most of the people have gone through various stages of pain in their lives. And, hence, a variety of treatments have been given to them. With the fast growing technologies and science, it has become quite easier for the human being to treat most of the health problems of the patient. Headache, migraine problems and chronic pains are some common problems emerging from the fast moving day to day life. Fortunately, our medical science has sorted out this problem also.

Butalbital is one of the suggested medications to treat chronic pains, headache, migraine problems etc. Butalbital is a 5-allyl-5-isobutylbarbituric acid. It is a kind of Barbiturate with the intermediate duration of action. Its various formulations are combines with codeine are approved from FDA for the treatment of Tension headache. Combinations of Butalbital with other medications are marketed under various names; like Butalbital with Paracetamol is marketed under Axocet, Bucet, Cephadyn, Phrenilin and Forte; Butalbital in combination with aspirin is traded as Axotal are few to name.

Butalbital is also combined with caffeine to give the better results. It is in general known to most of the people that caffeine helps in relaxing during the tension headaches and chronic pains. Therefore, many medications for headaches are suggested to take with tea and coffee as they have caffeine in some quantity as the ingredient. Caffeine helps in managing the blood flow to brain and the person feels light headed after taking it. Any patient of headache, chronic pains or migraine can be recommended to consider Butalbital for their treatment. It is an effective and approved medication for the treatment for relieving from pain. Butalbital has the same chemical formula as in Talbutal but with the different structure. The medication is usually recommended in the severe condition of the pains as it could have some adverse effects on the patient’s body.

Some of the common identified side effects of the medication are dizziness, feeling of intoxication, nausea, sedation, drowsiness and light headedness. These are some common side effects which could not affect the health of the patient in the long run; however, its other major side effect is the addictive nature of Butalbital. It has been observed that many people get addictive to the medicine it taken for the longer durations. It is highly recommended to the user to consult the doctor first before start taking the medicine. The doctor will study your case and will let you know whether you need to take the medicine and in how much quantity. One should not start and stop taking Butalbital without consulting the case to the doctor. Butalbital is an effective medication but should be taken with precaution.

Subtle, Undiagnosed Symptoms Could Be Signs Of Subclinical Hypothyroidism by by: Mark Hyman, M.D.

Do you have vague, uncomfortable symptoms with no obvious cause?

If so, you might be one of the 45 million people who have a chronic medical problem that is both under-diagnosed and under-treated.

Think about it…

Do you feel tired all the time and have trouble concentrating?

Is your skin dry? Do you retain fluid?

Has your sex drive gone downhill?

Are your hands and feet always cold?

Is your hair thinning, your voice a little hoarse, your fingernails a little thick?

Is your cholesterol high?

Do you have trouble losing weight or have you gained weight recently?

Are you depressed or anxious?

Do you have really bad PMS or trouble getting pregnant?

Do your muscles feel weak, crampy, and painful?

Most of these symptoms aren’t severe enough to send you to the emergency room.

In fact, we usually accept them as a normal part of life -- and so do conventional doctors. They don’t view these symptoms as serious.

But they certainly affect your quality of life. And they can lead to more serious problems, including heart attacks and diabetes.

So what causes these symptoms?

It’s called hypothyroidism.

In this condition, your overall metabolic gas pedal has slowed down because the master gland that controls it, your thyroid gland, isn’t functioning at full speed.

If your thyroid slows down, every other organ and system in your body slows down, including your brain, heart, gut, and muscles.

Thyroid function is really a gray area. But most doctors view it as black or white.

Conventional doctors tend to believe that you can diagnose hypothyroidism only through one blood test, called TSH, and that you only qualify for treatment if your blood level is over 5.0.

But this ignores a whole group of people who have what we call subclinical hypothyroidism. It is called that because doctors have a hard time diagnosing it.

Subclinical hypothyroidism may trigger many low-grade symptoms, like those described above. Yet it causes just slight changes in your blood tests.

In fact, it often only shows up in tests that most doctors never perform.

I see this all the time in my medical practice: Patients come in with vague complaints that alone may not seem too significant.

But when you put them all together, they tell an important story.

For example, take the 73-year-old woman who had fatigue, sluggishness, poor memory, slight depression, dry skin, constipation, and mild fluid retention.

Her doctor brushed her off.

But I believe that most of the symptoms of aging that we see are really symptoms of abnormal aging or dysfunction that is related to imbalances in our core body systems.

So I act as a medical detective to find clues where no one else is looking and put together a story about why a person feels sick. This gets them the answers and tools they need to get well.

In this case, we found that my patient had a sluggish thyroid. Although she didn’t meet all the conventional criteria for hypothyroidism, she had an autoimmune reaction that caused her thyroid to function poorly.

So we replaced her missing thyroid hormone, supported her nutrition, and made some simple lifestyle changes. She soon felt alert, energetic, and youthful -- and all of her other symptoms cleared up.

Another patient was a 28-year-old chronically constipated woman.

She also felt tired in the mornings, always needed coffee, and had trouble staying up at night.

She thought this was normal. She didn’t know she had a sluggish thyroid.

But as soon as we supported her nutrition and eliminated her food allergens (particularly gluten), which create inflammation and interfere with thyroid function, she improved.

Low thyroid function affects people of all ages.

It is very common because of our exposure to toxins such as heavy metals and pesticides, nutritional deficiencies, and chronic stress, all of which interfere with our thyroid function.

And your thyroid isn’t just linked to the symptoms described here.

It is the master metabolism hormone that controls the function and activity of almost every organ and cell in your body -- so when it is sluggish or slow, everything slows down.

Fortunately, we can diagnose and treat problem, with a comprehensive functional medicine approach that uses the concepts of UltraWellness.

First, I determine if you have any of the chronic symptoms of hypothyroidism or diseases associated with it, such as:

• sluggishness in the morning
• poor concentration and memory
• low-grade depression
• dry skin
• hoarse voice
• thinning hair
• coarse hair
• being very sensitive to cold and having cold hands and feet
• low body temperature
• muscle pain
• weakness or cramps
• low sex drive
• fluid retention
• high cholesterol

Next, I do a physical examination for clues to a low-functioning thyroid.

I check for a low body temperature. Anything lower than 97.6 degrees F may be a sign of hypothyroidism.

I might also find fluid retention, a thick tongue, swollen feet, swollen eyelids, an enlarged thyroid gland, excessive earwax, a dry mouth, coarse skin, low blood pressure, or decreased ankle reflexes. I might even find that the outer third of the eyebrows is gone.

These are all physical signs that can be put together along with other symptoms to form a story of what is causing the problem.

Then I perform specific blood tests that give me a full picture of thyroid problems.

Finally, I design a nutrition, lifestyle, and supplement regimen and hormone replacement plan as needed to help people regain their health.

In my next article, I will discuss the major preventable -- and mostly hidden -- factors that slow your thyroid down. And I’ll tell you more about the special tests I use to diagnose thyroid problems, as well as how to specifically treat low thyroid function.

High Blood Pressure – Basic Information and Its Causes by Brainpulse India

High blood pressure is also referred as hypertension. The condition of high blood pressure arises when the force of blood flow increases significantly from the normal pressure in the walls of the arteries. High blood pressure is of two types - Primary and secondary. The primary high blood pressure indicates that there is no specific medical cause or reason to explain the patient’s condition. It is also referred as essential high blood pressure. The secondary high blood pressure happens due to the other conditions of the body such as kidney problems or tumors.

During the high blood pressure period, the force of blood flow increases and which raises the pressure on the arteries to flow the blood in the entire body. Arteries are the vessels that carry the blood from the pumping heart to the entire organs of the body. Every time when the heart beats, it pumps out the blood in the vessels with the systolic pressure and when it comes to rest between the beats, it has the low pressure which is called as diastolic pressure.

High blood pressure has several reasons. This means that the multiple factors jointly cause the high blood pressure in the body. However, all the reasons for the problem are not identified; but it has been observed that the high blood pressure tends to develops in the people who have high intake of salt in their diet. The other causes commonly found for the problem are obesity, hereditary susceptibility, advancing age and kidney failure etc. The genetic factor is one of the essential reasons for the hypertension in the younger generations of the family.

The treatments for high blood pressure are few. The patient needs to make significant changes in the diet plan. Intake of salt and caffeine should be reduced from the daily diet. If you have the habit of smoking and drinking habits then it also need to be controlled. The high blood pressure could be controlled even without taking the help of drugs and medicines. It can be cured by herbal medicines and by making some changes in the diet plan. But if the condition of the patient becomes severe then it is recommended to consult the doctor as soon as possible.
